Great South Run 2009
Our exercise instructor Jan Osborne raised £190 for the Charity when sponsored on the Great South Run in Portsmouth on 25th October. Well done again Jan!

Triple fff Brewery of Four Marks has donated £500 to Cardiac Rehab, being the proceeds of their summer open day.  The cheque was presented by brewery director Graham Trott, a long-term supporter of the charity.

The Lions Club of Alton has donated £1,000 to Cardiac Rehab, being the proceeds of the jointly staged Golf Event held in August. The cheque was presented by Lions Club President Moira Baker on Monday 23rd November. Our warmest thanks go to the Lions and to the Rehab Golf Society for all of their hard work in putting on this annual event.

Alton Health Centre promotes Staywell Scheme
The GPs at Alton Health Centre are writing to patients considered at high risk of developing cardiovascular disease, suggesting that they consider enrolling on Cardiac Rehab's Staywell Scheme of exercise and health education.  About 600 diabetics and other high risk patients are being mailed. Patients should receive their letter by mid December. The intention is to repeat this exercise with other local GP surgeries on a rolling basis.

Exercise Instructor raises over £3,200 for Cardiac Rehab
Our super-fit exercise instructor Sandra Letford has raised a total of £3,263 for the charity (including Gift Aid to be reclaimed) by completing the Oxford to Cambridge Cycle Ride in September.  Well done, Sandra, and many thanks from all of us here.

Lord Armstrong delivers Cardiac Rehab Annual Charity Lecture
An audience of about 120 people were given an education in Government by Lord Armstrong on the evening of Thursday 22nd October at Alton Maltings. Lord Armstrong was Mrs Thatcher's Cabinet Secretary, and gave some interesting insights on ministerial behaviour from the 1970s to the present day. Lord Armstrong was thanked by Dr  Jason Glover. The event will have raised around £4,000 (including Gift Aid) for the Charity. Full report

Glorious autumn day for Cardiac Rehab Ramble
Warm autumn sunshine blessed the annual sponsored Cardiac Rehab Ramble on Sunday 18th October.  Fifty seven walkers enjoyed the glorious sunshine, beautiful countryside and vibrant autumn colours on a 5 mile circuit around Chawton and Farringdon.  This was followed by reviving tea and biscuits at the Cardiac Rehab Centre, then off to Sunday lunch!  The walkers even had the rare opportunity to see a ploughing match at one point along the route! The event is expected to have raised about £1,000 for the Charity. Many thanks to Alton Heart Support Club for devising the route and marshalling the event, and to Fyffes' of Basingstoke for donating the energising bananas!

Cardiac Rehab seeks new General Manager
Graham Webb, Cardiac Rehab's General Manager, is to leave the Charity at the end of 2009, to pursue other business interests.  Graham joined the charity in May 2007.  The recruitment of a replacement General Manager is now starting.  Please contact Denise Ellis on 01420 544794 or by email if you are interested in the post and would like to receive an information pack. Cardiac Rehab at Alton Health Fair
Cardiac Rehab adopted a high profile, active role at the annual Alton Health Fair on 5th September at the Assembly Rooms. On our stand we were assessing "cardiovascular risk", i.e. the risk of a person developing heart disease over the next ten years, based on a number of factors, including blood pressure and cholesterol level (which were being measured by others at the Fair) and height/weight (which we were measuring). Anyone with a poor result was advised to speak with their GP for a more thorough assessment. We had a non-stop stream of "customers" for five hours - a great success.

Triple fff Brewery Open Day
The award winning Triple fff Brewery of Four Marks, near Alton, held an open day on Saturday 29th August that raised £500 for Cardiac Rehab. A further £210 was raised from draw ticket sales and miscellaneous donations on the day. The event involved an unlimited supply of beer plus live music and curry - an unbeatable combination. Many thanks to Graham Trott and the rest of the Triple fff team for all their hard work.

Alton Heart Support Club has donated £170 to purchase a further pulse oximeter for use in the gym. Pulse oximeters measure heart rates instantaneously when clipped to a patient's finger, and enable staff to monitor many patients frequently during exercise classes.

Debbie joins the team
We welcome to the Cardiac Rehab team Debbie Newton, who has just passed her BACR Phase IV exercise instructor qualification, having been sponsored by Cardiac Rehab. Debbie has already been voluntarily assisting the Phase III team at the Centre, and some years ago worked as a secretary at the Centre. Debbie will soon be regularly supervising Phase IV classes as well as providing holiday cover.

Morrison's Superstore Street Collection

Jollyon Coombs, Clerk to the Worshipful Company of Feltmakers of London, presented the Charity with a cheque for £6,500, being our share of the money raised by his recent fundraising row of the Thames from Gloucestershire to London. What a great effort! Many thanks to Jollyon and his support team.

Alton College donated £220.66 to Cardiac Rehab, this being our share of the proceeds of a series of sponsored sports events organised by students on the BTEC Natinal Diploma in Sport course. This was part of the diploma course.  The events ranged from basketball to tug-of-war.  Many thanks to all of the students (too numerous to mention by name) and to Tamsin Halstead, the course leader, who set up the programme.

Alton Summer Beer Festival permitted Cardiac Rehab to collect donations at both its lunchtime and evening sessions on 6th June, and we collected a grand total of £531! Many thanks to the ale enthusiasts from far and wide who contributed.

Basingstoke Street Collection (Festival Place)
Shoppers were out in force in Basingstoke on Saturday 6th June. Our collectors fought off the rival British Legion collectors (outside Festival Place) to take £661 in donations. Many thanks to all donors.

Norman Jones of Tadley, our 81 year old London Marathon competitor, raised a total of £840 in sponsorship money for Cardiac Rehab in this year's event in April.  Very well done Norman, we are all full of admiration!

Jollyon conquers the Thames
Cardiac Rehab exerciser Jollyon Coombs successfully completed his 10-day row of the length of the Rover Thames from Lechlade (Glos) to Tower Bridge. He crossed the finish at around 10am on Sunday 10th May, having had to rise at 4am to be able to be in place for the opening of Teddington Lock! Jollyon will have raised about £25,000 in sponsorship, which Cardiac Rehab will share equally with three other charities. More on this story at www.feltmakers.co.uk

Sponsored Thames Row begins
Our exerciser Jollyon Coombs today starts his marathon row from Lechlade (Glos) to Tower Bridge, where he is due to arrive on Sunday 10th May. Jollyon reports that he has already raised £21,000 in sponsorship money (of which 25% will be donated to Cardiac Rehab), with hopefully more to come. We hope that Jollyon arrives in London in one piece!

Alton Street collection
The second collection of the year held in Alton, on 25th April and this time in the town centre, raised £602, slightly more than the corresponding collection last year. So much for economic doom and gloom! Many thanks to all who gave, and to our merry band of collectors.

Cardiac Rehab runners complete London Marathon
Our instructor Julie Hewson completed the course in an excellent 3hrs 32mins, and 81 year-old Norman Jones completed it in 7hrs 6mins (the 6th man in the over 80 category). Reading Half Marathon raises money
Our instructor Jan Osborne raised £423 for Cardiac Rehab by sucessfully completing the Reading Half Marathon on 29th March. Jan is a serial sponsored runner, raising thousands of pounds for us over the years. Well done again, Jan, and we hope you get your London Marathon place next year!

Norman Jones, an 81 year old graduate of the programme at Cardiac Rehab (and who currently exercises in Tadley) is to run the 2009 London Marathon on 26th April and is collecting sponsorship for the benefit of Cardiac Rehab. Race Night 2009
Race Night on 13th March was once again a  great success, and will raise about £1,500  for the charity.  The punters were sustained by a tasty curry prepared and supplied by Jimmy Patel (Alton Mayor and Cardiac Rehab alumnus), washed down with lashings of cold beer and wine from the in-house bar. Special thanks to Jerry Janes, our regular  auctioneer and comedian, and to Jack Webb, our answer to William Hill.

Jollyon Coombs' Thames Challenge

Alton Lions - Cardiac Rehab Golf Day
Alton Lions presented Cardiac Rehab founder Hugh Bethell with a cheque to the charity for £800, the sum raised at the Lions-Rehab Golf Day at the Sherfield Oaks course in September 2008.  Many thanks to the Lions' organising committee and to all participants. This year's event will be on 26th August.

Mirage Pairs Golf - Worldham Park Golf Club
After much totting up, Worldham Park Golf Club presented Cardiac Rehab with £485 raised as a result of the 2008 Mirage Pairs golf competition. Many thanks to the Club, to Dave Strong who organised the competition, and to all the members of the Club and the Cardiac Rehab Golf Society who took part. This year's event will be on 9th August.

High performance treadmill installed
We have installed an additional treadmill in the gym.  The new high performance machine, a Powerjog JX100, has been specially chosen to allow the Full Bruce fitness test to be carried out on all Phase III rehab patients in the main gym, as well as being suitable for use in Phase IV rehab exercise circuits.  Many thanks to the Rehab Golf Society for contributing £1,600 towards the purchase of this valuable machine.

At the Alton Winter Beer Festival on 31st January there was a collection for Cardiac Rehab, taking some £688!  Many thanks to the beer drinkers of the Alton area for their generosity.

Cardiac Rehab launches the Staywell Scheme
Cardiac Rehab has teamed up with East Hampshire District Council to offer a new service for local GPs and their patients – the Staywell Scheme. The Scheme will provide exercise and health education to local people who have not yet developed heart disease, but who are rated by their GP as being at high risk of doing so.  These “high risk” patients will typically be attending GPs’ clinics for high blood pressure, diabetes or obesity.
