Fashion Show - Cardiac Rehab Centre
Qwirky Women, PS Lingerie, Penny Posh Frocks, The Shoe Orchard and Captain Tortue Group ran a very successful Fashion Show in aid Of Cardiac Rehab. Many thanks to all the shops that participated and to Joan Mossop and Angela for organising the evening and the models who displayed the clothes so professionally. The evening is expected to raise over £750 which is a fantastic contribution to the Charity.

Race Night with Curry Supper - Cardiac Rehab Centre
Around sixty five Racegoers enjoyed the race night with curry supper held at the Cardiac Rehab Centre on Friday 19th November. Seven races were hotly contested with the auctioning of horses reaching ever higher bids and increasing levels of betting on individual horses as the evening progressed. A magnificent curry supper was provided by Jimmy Patel and his family for which many thanks. Thanks also to David Gay and Jerry Janes for running the evening and Will Spooner, from the Wheatsheaf Inn in Market Square, Alton, together with his helpers, for running the tote. The sum raised by the evening currently stands at £1,538.30.

Cardiac Rehab Golf Society Donation
£2117.31 has been donated by the Cardiac Rehab Golf Society towards the cost of capital items purchased by the Charity in this financial year. The funds have been raised during golf events throughout 2010 and have covered the cost of a new compressor which drives gym equipment, a rowing machine, a cordless microphone system for the instructors and a water pump. Many thanks to the Golf Society for this generous donation.

Bridge Tea - Cardiac Rehab Centre, Chawton Park Road, Alton GU34 1RQ
52 Bridge players took part in the Bridge and tea afternoon held at the Cardiac Rehab Centre. The players were treated to a wonderful tea and enjoyed a raffle and gift stalls. The afternoon raised over £880 and many thanks to the organisers for such a succesful event.

Annual Cardiac Rehab Charity Lecture 2010 - Lord David Owen -
The Maltings, Alton.
The annual lecture lived up to its reputation for hosting the best, most entertaining and most interesting evening of the year! Lord David Owen, doctor, Navy Minister, Health Minister, Foreign Secretary, co-founder of the SDP and now a member of the House of Lords spoke widely about world leaders and how the course of world history had been critically shaped by the physical and mental illnesses of those who have governed us over the past 100 years. Few would disagree with Lord Owen's final words of wisdom on how to reduce the risk of the disasters which may follow the inappropriate actions of leaders sickness - limit their time in office to no more than eight years!

Cardiac Rehab/Alton Rotary Club Community Walk
This year Cardiac Rehab teamed up with Alton Rotary Club and the Alton Heart Support Club to organise the Alton Community Walk. There was a choice of two routes - 4.5 miles or 9 miles, starting in the Alton Market Square and walking through the lovely countryside around Shalden, Bentworth and Thedden.
In glorious sunshine fifty walkers covered the two routes finishing back in the Market Square having enjoyed a wonderful walk in the Hampshire countryside.

Alton Aquatherapy Club
The Alton Aquatherapy Club has met for many years to provide exercise for people with particular needs at the swimming pool at Treloars College. The club is no longer able to meet and the members have donated £642 to Cardiac Rehab which is much appreciated. Many thanks for this donation.

An Indian Experience - an evening of music and dance.
This was held at the Alton College forum and introduced the music and dance of India by a group of professional dancers and musicians. It was a great opportunty to experience the thrill and history of Indian music from a very talented group of performers. The audience of around 140 certainly enjoyed the entertainment and also the refreshments provided before and after the event. Many thanks to Atul Patel and his family for organising the evening and ensuring it was such a success.

Jacqui Woolgar Retires from Cardiac Rehab
Jacqui left the charity at the end of August. Jacqui has worked for Cardiac Rehab for the last 11 years as an Events organiser, specialising in the large Plant Fairs that ran so successfully for several years, as the PA to the last three General managers and as one of the reception team. Many thanks to Jacqui for all her contributions to the charity and good wishes for the future.

Alton Lions-Rehab Golf Trophy
In spite of fickle weather the third Lions-Cardiac Rehab Golf Day was a great success with eighty players braving the elements and raising over £1500 for Cardiac Rehab. Thanks to Alton Lions for their organisation, Sheen Stickland for sponsorship, donors of raffle prizes and Test Valley Golf Club for their support.
The winning team was Eric Phillips, Will Spooner, Kevin Baines and John Chapple. The individual lady winner was Jennifer Clelland and individual male winner was Will Spooner.

Linda Phillips has given up her role of Shop Manager and Stefanie Avis , who was the Assistant Shop Manager, has been promoted to Shop Manager. Staywell Scheme Expands
The Staywell Scheme is designed for people at relatively high risk of suffering coronary heart disease and is expanding in 2010/11 to take on 150 new starters. A bumper book sale with tea and cakes took place at the Cardiac Rehab Centre, Chawton Park Road, Alton (behind the Sports Centre) on Wednesday 12th May. Many thanks to the volunteers who manned the sale and teas and raised £300 for the charity.

The Hampshire Indoor Bowls Association has donated £501.14 to the Charity. BACR announces dates for 2011 courses at Cardiac Rehab Centre
The British Association for Cardiac Rehabilitation (BACR) has announced the dates and details of courses that it is running at the Cardiac Rehab Centre in addition to the dates already arranged for 2010. The very exciting news is that Weybrook Park Club in Basingstoke has chosen Cardiac Rehab as their preferred charity for the 2010/11 season. Spring Ladies Fashion Show and luncheon
A spring ladies fashion show and luncheon, with presentation from Optionelle who showcased their spring range, took place at the Alton Grange Hotel on Monday 22nd March 2010. It was a very successful event with 70 attendees which raised at least £360 for Cardiac Rehab. Very many thanks to Joan Mossop, Angela Davis and the Alton Grange Hotel for all their hard work in putting on the event.

Friends of Cardiac Rehab launched
110 people attended the 'Friends of Cardiac Rehab' launch at the Cardiac Rehab Centre in Alton on Friday 26th February. Presentations from current exercisers highlighted the benefits of the Centre and there were also presentations on fundraising and ideas for events for the future. A number of attendees volunteered to run events or be volunteers in addition to others signing up to donate via covenants. For a report of the evening click here. The Cardiac Rehab Centre depends upon fund-raising to continue its day to day service. A drive to increase our income is being launched for a number of reasons - the recession has made funds less easy to raise, we are taking on more Centre users and are planning for future growth of the Centre. From 1st April 2010
Changes to Pricing structure
From 1st April there will be an increase in the price of the induction and exercise sessions run in the Cardiac Rehab Centre. Induction will be £12.50 and classes £4.25 per session. Due to grant funding, for a year from 1st April 2010, there will be no charge for 150 new Staywell undergraduates for their induction and two sessions per week for ten weeks.
Spouses or partners will pay the normal charges. If you are interested in joining the Staywell scheme please contact your GP and drop into the Cardiac Rehab Centre to view the facilities. More details are given in the 'Our Exercise Programmes.

Changes to Exercise Sessions
From the week commencing 22nd February 2010 the Advanced class at 8.00am on a Friday morning will become an Independent Exercise session starting at 7.45am and finishing at 9.00am. The Independent exercise session on Saturday mornings will commence from 8.00am and continue to finish at 11.30am. diary date for 22nd March 2010.

Alton Heart Support Club AGM
Peter Treacher reported on a busy and successful year for the club and Kevin Jones gave the Treasurer's report where there were no issues. Tony Fendall was elected Chairman with Sheila Goater as Vice Chairman. Joyce Fox stood down from the committee and Tony Fendall thanked Peter Treacher for his excellent year as Chairman and Joyce for several years contribution to the committee and as walks coordinator. A full programme of events is planned for 2010.

Alton Beer Festival
Collections for the Charity were made at both the afternoon and evening sessions of the Alton Beer Festival and realised the grand sum of £633.29 to go towards the cost of running the Charity. New General Manager
Tony Causton has been appointed as Cardiac Rehab General Manager from 1st February 2010. Tony's background has been in working for large commercial companies and also in the last few years running his own consultancy business mainly in the Human Resources field. Tony will be based at the Cardiac Rehab centre in Alton and will be taking over the responsibilities of the previous General Manager - Graham Webb.

Two new classes due to increasing demand

Excellent response to Staywell Scheme mailing programme
In the weeks before Christmas Cardiac Rehab mailed out details of its Staywell Scheme to about 600 patients of Alton Health Centre who suffer from diabetes or high blood pressure. This has resulted in 45 referrals to the Scheme, an excellent "hit rate" of 7.5%. The response proves that there is a demand in the community for exercise programmes for unfit and/or unwell people, particularly older people, in a welcoming and non-intimidating environment.
